In May 1915 James McFadyen McNeill, a 23 year old naval architect from Clydebank, graduated from Glasgow University and immediately enlisted for army service. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery he was posted to France to join the fighting on the Somme in September 1916.
During his time at the Front he was awarded the Military Cross and was given a series of promotions to reach the rank of Major.
Over 90 years later, twenty three letters James had written during his time at the front were discovered amongst family papers.
A Brother's Letters contains these letters plus a commentary covering the progress of the war, the deployment of James's units and world, local and family events.
