Eyrie Cedrela lives in a small village with her aunt and sister outside of the capital city of Tulvan. She leads an ordinary life, when an altercation with her sister unleashes a dormant power insider her. Power that was inherited through her parents, and coveted by the kingdoms of the world. She is able to keep her abilities a secret until an attempted robbery leads to an unlikely friendship with a noble elf, Nyarriku, from the ancient Aldevera Forrest. She decides that learning how to control her abilities may be a better outcome for her.

She is lead through the Aldevera by forest spirits to meet Panscal, a guardian of the forest who teachers her about her druidic magic tied to the lunar patron Magda. When war inevitably happens between the long feuding families of northern Cambar and southern Tulvan, rumors of Eyrie's healing magic reaches enemy ears. She decides she can help other by working with her aunt, healing those effected by the war.

A lunar druid named Niolak comes to visit her with promises to help her and himself learn from their opposite abilities. Niolak's betrayal of Eyrie leaves him dead in a failed attempt to steal her power. Instead, his powers are absorbed into her. Upon finding his dead body, Niolak's brother Fiend, a soldier in the Cambar army, hunts Eyrie down and brings her with the Cambar army back north.

Fiend has been cursed by his druidic patron for practicing blood magic like Niolak attempted. Because of this his mind is twisted. Eyrie is able to push back his curse, temporarily, which keeps her alive. But, others wish to use her power. The court druid Entoch wishes to learn of her abilities and how they can be used for the Cambar kingdom.

While traveling north, Eyrie shares her time between calming Fiend and training with Entoch. Through her time with Entoch, Eyrie meets the eldest prince of Cambar, Ronan, and his group of warriors called the Stridesmen. She journeys with them back to the capital of Cambar, Tiavat. She continues to learn of her abilities and the group learns of a plot to bring dark magic into the castle. But to what end?

When the Tulvan troops, enraged by the death of their prince Thralis, reach Tiavat, Eyrie has a chance to escape. Her elven friend Nyarikku helps her outside of the palace walls, but they are stopped by returning victorious Ronan and the Stridesmen. Eyrie is caught, and given an ultimatum but the king, join Cambar and heal the wounded Tulvan Prince, Primus, as part of the peace treaty, or remain in jail.
