Some fairytales must be told in a different voice. Some princesses end up saving the day on their own.
Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away, there lived a princess who could not speak. No whispers, no laughter, no singing, and no conversation of any kind. The King and Queen were alarmed that their beautiful daughter would not utter a single word. They vowed to scour the countryside in search of a cure so they could finally hear their daughter's voice. Doctors and court advisors arrive at the castle, but they cannot find a cure.
In desperation, her parents issue a decree that is sent throughout the nation. Anyone who can restore the princess' voice will be awarded with whatever they desire. Countless people offer theories as to the cause of princess' silence, and how it can be cured, but all fail to find the true reason.
Finally, a young man arrives who doesn't mind her so-called affliction. In fact, he wants to marry her. The king declares it will be so, but only if the young man can make his daughter talk. The daring lad comes up with a plan.
A kiss! A kiss will cure the lady and restore her voice. It must, for that is how fairytales go, is it not?
Except, this is not an everyday fairytale and not even kisses will do the trick. It is only when the king condemns the young man to death that the princess is moved to speak. She cries out to save the man who has captured her heart. The silent princess ultimately uses the power of her voice to save the day...and the man she loves.
Told in rhyme with engaging illustrations, this story can be read aloud to children of all ages or enjoyed by any child who loves a whimsical take on the traditional fairytale.
