This safety guide is intended to expand the scope of and complement the available Agency literature in the areas of the transport of radioactive materials and emergency planning and preparedness for radiological emergencies. lt provides detailed guidance on how to respond promptly to a transport accident involving radioactive materials in order to mitigate its consequences. Special attention is given to such problems as how to identify the presence of radioactive materials, their quantity and risk; how to assess the radiological consequences of an accident; and what measures should be taken in order to keep public exposures to a minimum and restore the situation to normal as soon as possible.
