This translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, published in the Soviet Union almost 100 years ago, in 1923. The text itself reads well, and its poetry and puns are good. However, the translator-Anatolii Frenkel a.k.a. A. D'Aktil (1890-1942)-cuts quite a repulsive figure. 

Frenkel was a creator of enthusiastic hymns praising the new dictatorial regime. Known to the millions over the decades was his March of Budenny's Cavalry (1920). '"Give us Warsaw, give us Berlin-and here we plough into the Crimea!"')-a message of the World Revolution carried on the bayonets of the Red Army. 

Frenkel's Alice translation bears no traces of his Communist allegiances or a recent Civil War propaganda. His puns are quite inventive, with especially good phonetic equivalents for Carroll's school puns. One feels that his book is directed not only at children but also, tongue-in-cheek, at their parents.
