The Kyrgyz people are an indigenous ethnic group of the Tian-Shan Mountains, in the very centre of Asia. The Kyrgyz language belongs to the Kipchak group of the central Turkic language family. It is the official language of the Kyrgyz Republic, also known as Kyrgyzstan. There are over four million native speakers of Kyrgyz. The Kyrgyz literature has rich folklore and written traditions including the famous Manas (18th century), one of the longest epic poems in history (500,000 lines). The works of the Kyrgyz author Çñgz Aytmatov were translated into 176 languages and published in 128 countries in over 100 million copies. Before and after Çñgz Aytmatov, dozens of writers contributed to the rich Kyrgyz literature, among them Kasm Tnstanov, Tügölbay Sdkbegov, Mukay Elebaev, Aal Tokombav, Kasmal Jantöev, Joomart Bökönbaev, Uzakbay Abdukaimov, Kazat Akmatov, etc. Numerous books have been translated into Kyrgyz from various languages. “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by the great English writer Lewis Carroll, translated into Kyrgyz language as “ o” (“Alisann Kzktar lkosündogü ukmutuu okuyalar”), represents another serious step for the Kyrgyz literature.
