Whitman's longitudinal case study is thorough, and informative, comparing Japanese mathematics curriculum and methods of instruction with those of American schools. Geometry, emphasis and neglect, form the most obvious points of difference, and the writer's findings have serious implications for the current crisis in mathematics education in American schools.
