A Scottish Family Tale 1650-1950

A Scottish Family Tale 1650-1950 offers a unique opportunity to voyeur into the lives of three centuries of Scottish seafaring history created by the Young Family.  The timeline is significant in the evolution of the British Empire, World Trade and the Youngs.  Their seafaring story begins in Edinburgh around 1650 with a humble sailor and travels around the globe and back to New York City and ends with the prestigious position of Chairman of the American Bureau of Shipping.

The beginning of the story opens a window into the lives of Scots living and working in Edinburgh in the 1600s.  It then follows them and others to all points of the compass down three centuries with the most common thread being – Seafaring.  It explores little-known impediments like Privateering and Impressment, it chronicles the hazards of Arctic Whaling, timelines the growth of the Scottish Mercantile Trade and benchmarks the strength of the camaraderie that is - life in the Merchant Navy.  It explores the vagaries of maritime traditions and superstitions in order to gives a valid picture of the authentic lives of these Youngs and their seafaring community.
