Against the Tide

Throughout much of the 20th century, small numbers of white South Africans have worked for the end of the white supremacist government. This book examines the role played by "white democrats" in the key formative years of the national liberation movement. It explores the variety of paths that led whites to politicial activism, and analyzes the impact of whites' involvement in the daily workings and ideological directions of the liberation movement. Particular attention is given to the white presence in the Communist Party of South Africa, the Springbok Legion, the South African Congress of Democrats, and Umkhonto we Sizwe.
