This is the story of my daughter, Akilah, who dreamed of traveling the world and documenting all of her experiences along the way. It pleased my heart that she became a journalist and fulfilled her dreams of traveling. I begin this story before she was born because incidents that occurred then would later encourage Akilah to take a life-altering trip to Africa on a work assignment. Akilah is the daughter of an African freedom fighter, John Amapindi, whom I met at a university in Jamaica. When I was pregnant with Akilah, John was called to war and I eventually lost touch with him. I would not know of John's whereabouts until many years later when tragedy struck back home in Jamaica and John's hidden traces were found in the briefcase of my murdered relative. Soon Akilah and I set out to find John and were led all the way to Africa on a wondrous adventure. Years after, Akilah would return to Africa a second time to work and all our lives were changed forever. While sorting through her belongings, I came across a stack of Akilah's writings, and together we tell the details of her remarkable journey.
