We accompany Andrew Bloomfield, an elderly retired contract math prof living in Toronto, over the year 2016. Originally Australian, he's lived in Canada since his mid-twenties. He has a failed marriage and various amatory involvements behind him. He has relatively recently become incensed at the return of the MAD era through the actions of the Russian president V. V. Padlov, and has formulated an apparently impracticable plan to assassinate him. While pursuing this he discovers he has a life-threatening illness, but resolves to follow through....

This theme is interrupted three times by recollections of his personal and professional life in and around Toronto, of his childhood and youth in Australia, and of the time he spent as an exchange student in Moscow in the 1960s. His life is coloured by his love of mathematics and the Russian language, and by a voyeuristic bent.

Written in 2016--2018, the book would seem to be somewhat prescient about subsequent actions of the Russian president. Apart from this, it contains, among there things, quite a bit of Canadiana and Australiana.
