Labelled as a washed up and delusional conspiracy theorist, Dr. Kendrick Ivy resents the big brother approach embraced by the World Commons Commission. As a global society living under an authoritarian brand of technocratic rule, any level of personal privacy was difficult to maintain. Adding to the challenge, advanced humanoids dubbed "Abeings" had integrated into most areas of everyday life, acting as information collection agents for their controlling overlords.

Now on his deathbed, Kendrick struggles with one final decision. Does he risk telling Marti, his beloved granddaughter and sole heir, the unvarnished truth behind his public persona? In the end, Kendrick decides to let Marti figure things out on her own through a series of clues he left for her to follow.

Soon after Kendrick's demise, Marti learns of her grandfather's real identity. She discovers his secret Number Station situated high in the Colorado Rockies, engaged in the task of recording intelligently formed signals believed to be coming from an unknown extra-terrestrial source. Despite their best efforts, the Number Station team is unable to decipher the signals. At the same time, Marti comes face to face with a jarring personal revelation that uproots everything Kendrick has led her to believe.

With the help of her reclaimed childhood friend Leo, Marti devises a way to interpret the Number Station signals only to learn that an alien attack designed to annihilate humankind is imminent. Not knowing who she can trust with this knowledge, it is up to Marti and her newfound colleagues at the Number Station to find a way to intercept the alien invaders.
