The research in landscape painting during the last twenty years has rediscovered some exceptional nineteenth-century artists, one of them being Andre Giroux (1801 - 1879). Winner of the Prix de Rome en Paysage Historique, Giroux painted 'en plein air' without becoming an avant-garde painter. In Rome at the same time as Corot, Giroux painted startling landscapes of the Roman Campagna. The relationship between these two artists was particularly significant. Both arrived for the first time in 1825 and both shared the same objective: the necessity to paint Nature for its own sake. This book presents not only a wide range of Giroux's paintings and drawings but also some of his important photographs. This book deals with all aspects of Giroux's activities and is the most comprehensive publication on this artist. It restores the painter to his just position in the evolution of landscape art on the threshold of Impressionism.
