This catalogue accompanies the first major retrospective of the lives of artist couple Anna-Eva Bergman and Hans Hartung. Bergman, born in Norway, was a pioneering abstract artist who drew deep inspiration from landscapes and natural forms; and Hartung, born in Germany, was crucial in the development of what came to be known as gestural or informal art. Using drawings, masterpiece paintings, archival documents, and photographs, the exhibition follows the biographies of Bergman and Hartung, covering their initial meeting in the 1920s, their more than ten-year separation, and eventual reunion in 1952 up to their deaths in the 1980s. For the first time, their shared thematic interests, including nature, the cosmos, music, and more, are shown in relation to one another, detailing a shared artistic life. The catalogue features texts by curators Pierre Wat and Theo Carnegy-Tan; renowned author and director of the Hartung-Bergman Foundation, Thomas Schlesser; founder of AWARE, Camille Morineau; writer and critic Catherine Millet; and Pauline Mari.
