This book is a political tract written by João Baptista Moreira in 1824, at a time when Portugal was in the midst of a tumultuous period of political and social upheaval. Moreira's Apologia is a defense of the Portuguese government's policies in its African colonies, particularly with regard to the controversial issue of slavery. Moreira argues that slavery is a necessary evil for the economic development of Portugal's colonies, and that the government's efforts to regulate and limit the practice are both just and compassionate. This book is an important historical document for understanding the complex and often contradictory dynamics of colonialism and slavery in 19th-century Portugal.
