When brokenness is overwhelming, it’s easy to question where God is in all of it. We wonder, Where is the light? And more important, How can we, as believers, be the light in such a dark place?

These were familiar questions to Allyson Golden, a young nurse serving on a pediatric unit, whose distress reached a breaking point the night she walked into a hospital room just as a patient was attempting to take his own life. The patient was okay, but Allyson realized she was not. As a Christian woman, she wanted to be a light for Christ but didn’t know how when she could hardly find it herself. 

Seeking encouragement, Allyson turned to the Word of God and began to study “the light.” She discovered that she didn’t possess the power to shine on her own but that the Light of the world, which no darkness can overcome, was actively living in her and shined out whether she realized it or not.
