Description:
At the Heart of Luke is a unique contribution to Lucan studies focusing on the conspicuous concentration of Jesus' parables in chapters 14-16 of this gospel. Emmrich argues that this complex of texts forms the theological heart of Luke. The theme of reversal is the trademark common denominator of virtually all the stories and wisdom sayings assembled in this well-defined text unit. As such, it is key to the essential message of Luke's Gospel and furnishes the rationale for its inevitable climax, the great reversal of Jesus' cross. This study will prove to be of great benefit for students of Luke, especially those with a particular interest in the parables of Jesus that are unique to this Gospel.
Endorsements:
""Emmrich gives us an informative and lucid exploration of Luke's unique parables as expositions of the 'great reversal' theme presented in Mary's song of exultation. Both preachers and scholars will find this study stimulating and helpful.""
--Dan McCartney, Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Redeemer Theological Seminary
""Martin Emmrich . . . is a brilliant scholar as well as the pastor of a vibrant Christian congregation. As a result, he has produced a superb introduction to the Gospel of Luke by examining its heart in Luke 14-16 after seeing Mary's Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), introducing us to Luke's central theme of the 'great reversal.' Emmrich does this in such a way that any thoughtful Christian can benefit from his pastorally sensitive biblical interpretation. Scholars, pastors, and laypeople alike will profit from reading this book. I know I have!""
--S. M. Baugh, Professor of New Testament, Westminster Seminary California
