In Bacula of North American Mammals, originally published by the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan, William Henry Burt describes the bacula of various North American mammals. Before this work, there was little material and few articles on the bacula of mammals. With the help of university staff and graduate students, Burt was able to preserve these bones and accumulate a large collection between 1930 and 1960. Although this collection incorporated a vast array of mammals, bats and cats were excluded due to their status as insectivores. The results of Burts study are organized by species, and include the generas Procyon, Nasua, Potos, Bassariscus, and Jentinkia.
