One fateful night in 1910, in Washington's snowy Cascade Mountains, Laurie Davis's life takes an unexpected turn. As one of only eight passengers to survive the horrible Wellington railroad disaster that kills ninety-six people, she struggles to understand why her life is spared. Laurie's work as an editor's assistant at the Everett Daily Herald puts her in a position to vent her feelings about women's suffrage and prohibition. The birth of her son, her friend's encounter with spousal abuse, labor unrest and violence, World War I, influenza, and the usual bumps of everyday life tax the wisdom and courage she earned with her survival from the crash.
