Anna Beckett is clearing out her mother Betty's house when she finds a hidden diary. On the cover, in Betty's handwriting, there is a simple, unmistakable message:

BURN THIS.

According to the diary, thirty-five years earlier, Betty witnessed the murder of Anna's childhood best friend, Linda.

The diary is quickly dismissed by the police as fiction - Betty's attempt at creative writing, drawing inspiration from Linda's tragic death.
