California and the Fictions of Capital analyses the geographical imagination in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century California. It explores the contradiction inherent in geographic imagination, how it was allied to capitalist development but simultaneously held capitalism's outcomes suspect. It focuses on the pressure to turn nature into money and how the capitalist transformation of California was narrated and represented in novels of the period.
