Capitalist Schools: Explanations and Ethics in Radical Studies of Schooling

In a cogent critique of radical educational theories, Daniel Liston interrogates the works of Anyon, Apple, Bowles, Freire, Gintis, Giroux, Hogan, Carnoy and others, questioning their reliance on functional explanations to articulate the connection between schools and society. Liston also questions their use of justice as a moral standard, arguing that an ethic of virtue should be appealed to instead.
"Capitalist Schools" reflects a maturing of the radical critical enterprise and as such, can help provide much of the necessary coneceptual "underpinnings" that, when complemented by the other more culturally-oriented traditions of neo-Marxist and feminist works, will make critical scholarship even more powerful.
