The collections of Swiss museums hold ceramic treasures of unknown quantity and immeasurable value. These precious objects from national and international manufacturers are not only unknown to a broader public but to most experts as well, first and foremost because they are not on exhibition and have never been publicised in any form. The Ceramica Foundation, based in Basel, Switzerland has dedicated its activities since 1954 to promoting research on ceramics. In 2009 the foundation launched the project Ceramica CH, which aims to compile a national inventory of all publicly accessible collections of modern ceramics (1500 1950). This one-of-a-kind project will feature all institutions in Switzerland that own ceramic collections. Each volume of this series will be dedicated to one canton; the first volume catalogues and analyses the ceramic collections of Neuchatel. The Musee d'art et d'histoire in Neuchatel owns one of the five biggest collections in Switzerland, other collections from local museums, as for example in Neuchatel, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Le Locle ou Motiers, are featured as well.
