PREFACE. romanized spelling does not always agree with either of those authorities, the difference has probably arisen owing to the local dialect, but as the names were also written in the Chinese character it was in this way the tales have been traced in the works of the above-named authors. Mr. Larkin has again been good enough to go through the proofs, and as there is nothing like practical knowledge, the writer looks upon his censorship as of great value. He has also to thank Yr. Chas. E. Faull for the interest he has so kindly taken in collecting pieces suitable for illustration. In conclusion, it may be as well to add that this volume has, like the first, been compiled during leisure hours, and is now published in the hope that it may prove of interest and amusement to others.
