Harry Emerson Fosdick (1878 - 1969) was an American clergyman. He graduated from Colgate University in 1900, and Union Theological Seminary in 1904. He was the first major liberal Baptist minister in the 20th century. Fosdick became a central figure in the Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy within American Protestantism. The lectures in this book were part of the Cole Lectures at Vanderbilt University. Fosdick was concerned with the place of Christianity in a world with such rapid progress. Lectures include The Idea of Progress, The Need for Religion, The Gospel and Social Progress, Progressive Christianity, The Perils of Progress, and Progress and God.
