700 chronologically arranged articles examine events in Europe from 15,000 BC to 1997. The categories covered include business and labour, communications, cultural and intellectual history, law, environment, education, diplomacy and international relations, exploration and discovery, government and institutions, religion, science and technology, social reform treaties and alliances, and wars and civil unrest. Each illustrated entry identifies the event and key figures involved, describes the event and its background in some detail, and analyses the ramifications both short and long term. There follows a fully annotated Bibliography and Cross Reference section that directs readers to other articles in the set that may be of interest.
