Institutional failures—such as whitewashed Christianity, sexism, racism, and church hurt—and false teachings—such as theologies that center on the self instead of Christ—are among the reasons Christianity has become less appealing to, less affirming of, and dangerous to Black women. As a result, many Black women have turned away from the church to try to understand who they are or to live life on their own terms instead of God’s. Yet only the gospel can give us the sense of identity, purpose, and wholeness we seek.
