In contradistinction to the other Emirates such as Kano, Katsina, Zaria and Daura which were established and firmly built on old political and cultural centres, the Islamic Emirate of Bauchi was entirely a new phenomenon created by the conditions of the early 19th century Sakkwato Jihad launched and institutionalized amongst predominantly heathen or animist populations. Thus, without Sakkwato Jihad, there wouldn't have been a veteran warrior - cum - scholar like Ya'qubu I. Similarly, Bauchi Emirate wouldn't have been known to us in the annals of indigenous Islamic history in this part of the globe. Just like his religious and spiritual mentor whose ancestors are said to have migrated from far away Futa-Toro with temporary stop overs at various places until they finally settled at Degel, Ya'qubu I (the Jihad leader, the founder as well as the first Amir of Bauchi) shares some things in common with his master, even though to a lesser degree. This book analyzes Ya'qubu's contributions to the Sakkwato Jihad of the early 19th century by highlighting his military strategies, intellectual prowess, administrative expertise, proselytization activities and much more.
