"To create today is to create dangerously. Any publication is an act, and that act exposes one to the passions of an age that forgives nothing." In 1957, Albert Camus gave a speech entitled "Create Dangerously," which was, in effect, a call to arms for artists, in particular those who came from an immigrant background, like he did. Looking around at the legacy of the past, at a Europe emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, Camus understood the necessity of those making art in all forms as a part of civil society, and issued this cry for artistic freedom and responsibility.
