This is a book for teachers about the "Why?", "What?" and "How?" questions which arise when teaching dance. The book offers teachers a flexible resource to be used as they wish, based upon three strands of making, performing and viewing which are emphasized in the National Curriculum. Each unit is a structured approach for a single lesson, with possibilities for development into further related work. Units are grouped into modules of six lessons around a common theme chosen to engage young people's imaginations. Themes reflect topics from other areas of the curriculum, allowing the teacher to integrate the work in dance with classroom activities. The book is aimed principally at teachers of pupils in Key Stage 2 (there is another aimed at teachers of pupils in Key Stage 3), but the presentation is sufficiently flexible to be adapted for other age groups and for pupils with a variety of special educational needs. This book is appropriate for all teachers, whatever their prior level of dance teaching experience. More experienced teachers will be able to dip into the book as a resource of new ideas and approaches, while less experienced teachers can rely more heavily on the units until they have developed their own blend of styles and themes. Both of the authors have long experience in physical education and dance. Anne Allen is an independent adviser, having been an Advisory Teacher in PE and Dance for the London Borough of Sutton. Janis Coley is a freelance dance and PE teacher, with over 20 years experience with pupils aged 5-21. Both authors serve in the "Dance and the Child International" organization.
