All my family lived in England during World War II. Some were abroad and fighting, others tried to live as normal a life as possible, in bomb-ravaged London and surrounds. Aunty Bette died in 2009. She was the last survivor.

When she married Tom Gale in 1973 and he started telling me about his exploits during the war, I had to tell the stories. If I didn't write about them and it was my turn to leave this world, they would all be lost.

Imagine 4,000 troops sent into the Battle of Calais and being one of only 35 survivors. Then against Rommel in North Africa and being captured, twice.

There are not many veterans left from WWII. I hope this book will remind them and their families, as to what heroes they all were, and how we should never forget them.
