Dieses Werk ist eine Sammlung von hundert spirituellen Liedern in deutscher Sprache. Es ist ein wichtiger Beitrag zur deutschen protestantischen Kirchenmusik des 18. Jahrhunderts und eine herausragende Leistung von August Jakob Rambach. Die Lieder wurden während der Sturm-und-Drang-Epoche geschrieben und behandeln Themen wie Gotteserkenntnis, Nächstenliebe und Hoffnung.
