Derailed by History

"The surname is obviously French, but you are Indian? That is confusing!" uttered the American gentleman at our second meeting. I explained my mixed heritage while watching a face whose eyes gleamed brighter and whose smile grew more incredulous with the passing of each word. He had never come across an Anglo-Indian before, or even if he had, he hadn't heard the story.
