Dialogue and Critical Discourse

In this collection of previously unpublished essays, a group of eminent linguists and literary critics consider the relationship between spoken language and written text in light of the thought of the influential Russian formalist Mikhail Bakhtin. This interdisciplinary volume demonstrates the importance of Bakhtin's theory of dialogic meaning for a wide range of textual problems. The book is organized around three interconnected dimensions of Bakhtian dialogue: dialogic interactions between voices of a single text; intertextual dialogical exchanges; and dialogue between authors and readers.
