The volume assembles essays and articles by Paul Böckmann (1899-1987) on German literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Authors and subjects discussed are Grillparzer, Stifter, Storm, Fontane, Nietzsche, G. Hauptmann, George, Rilke, Thomas Mann, Hesse, Wedekind, Brecht, Benn, lyric poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries, expressionist drama. The volume also contains a number of texts combining autobiographical material with thoughts on the history of German studies, a bibliography of the author's publications, a catalogue of his university lectures and seminars, and a list of the doctoral theses he supervised.
