Dirty Little Secrets

There are many public successes who are private failures. One reason for the prevalent disparity between public and private life is the pressure to keep up appearances. When what people think about us matters to us more than what we think about ourselves, we are likely to move heaven and earth to protect that reputation. Speaking broadly, David had two options with the emergence of Bathsheba's pregnancy- to own up or to cover up. He chose the latter. Owning up was the appropriate thing to do but covering up was politically convenient. The thought of being rejected and disrespected by Uriah and possibly other subjects of Israel upon knowing the truth was more dreadful to David than the thought of misleading Uriah to be a father of his (David's) child.

The actions taken by David to cover up appears horrendous, but come to think of it, he is not so far removed from each of us. Which of us has not done something we were ashamed of, and tried to cover it up? One act is followed with another until it develops into a full-blown scandal.
