In 1995, the second edition of this reference was named Directory of the Year by the Directory Publishers Association. As part of Europa's "Regional Surveys of the World" series, this edition contains political, economic and social information useful for the understanding of this rapidly changing part of the world. Introductory essays by specialists examine topics which affect the region as a whole. Contributions include: "Political perspectives" by Jonathan Eyal; "Environment" by William Moomaw; and "Economy" by Alan Smith and Philip Hanson.
