A physically-upgraded vigilante whose killing instincts and compulsion to protect the treed fastness of Oregon's Cascade Range knows no bounds is ravaging the high country. Illegal acts are punished gruesomely, yet the methods used are inexplicable save for the grim reality of bodies strewn throughout the forests. Sheriff Virgil Merrill is frustrated and angry. The incredible strength necessary to rip heads and limbs from torsos is simply impossible for anything remotely human. Therein, of course, lies the explanation. The perpetrator is no longer human.
