In this research work, a novel approach using a switching resistor is proposed for reducing the distortion. Investigations are carried out to analyze the effect of load on the IGBT based power system developed using the concept of switching resistor. Harmonic distortions in the input and output of the system are calculated. Input and output voltages waveforms are recorded for all combinations by using signal recording software having duration of 1s with sampling rate of 16,000sa/s. Computer algorithm is designed to calculate the total harmonic distortion (THD) in the system. Reduction in the THD was observed in the given IGBT based power system.A total four experiments were conducted on the effect of reactive load conditions on IGBT based power system and analysis of the harmonic distortion was carried out. The analysis of the results showed that the IGBT based power system using the concept of switching resistor is capable of reducing harmonic distortion on the input power lines introduced because of external or internal load conditions.
