This chronology spans five centuries of American science -- from the discovery of the Americas through 1990 -- covering intellectual, organizational, biographical, bibliographical, and other aspects of science. A separate chapter lists nearly 1,000 scientists grouped according to the decade in which they reached age 25, and with references to a set of standard sources for additional biographical information. Each entry is labeled according to subject, and an index consisting chiefly of personal and corporate names also is provided. The research guide is an extended bibliographic essay and an alphabetical bibliography of more than 250 reference titles. In addition to conventional reference works, it also discusses electronic research strategies and sources, as well as manuscript and archival resources. This work can be consulted for data on individual historical events, examined for salient features of the subject within a limited chronological period, perused for an introduction to American science, or used as the starting point for research. The principal focus is on the natural and physical sciences, although some minor attention is given to medicine, technology, anthropology, psychology, and related areas.
