The present anthology titled Emotions on the Fringes: Feelings of the Marginalised from Late Antiquity to Early Modern Literature initially arose from a series of panels held at the International Medieval Congress in Leeds in 2022. The term 'Fringe' in this book's title is interpreted in its widest sense, signifying both geographical boundaries and the manifestation of social or ideological marginalisation. This broad definition facilitates the inclusion of various methodologies and a spectrum of textual evidence in the discussion. As a result, 'Fringe' is interpreted to include liminality, both figurative and literal marginality, and the supernatural. The contributions presented in this volume are therefore not only addressing emotions relating to 'Fringes' in both Old English and Old Norse-Icelandic literature, but also consider historical accounts, correspondences, and epic poetry from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern Period.
