The author was born in a poor and isolated Spain and grew up in a family divided by the Civil War. His parents' journey to America when he was a child inspired him to search for a mythical Neverland of knowledge, joy and freedom. He had to make a detour first, with stops in anti-Francoism, the Soviet Union, communist Cuba and China and cooperation with Latin American governments. When he finally arrived in America, he worked with the best academics in economics and political science, snooped in the racial politics of Chicago and enjoyed the frenzy of New York. He chose to stay in Washington. There he confirmed that Neverland, with its surprises and recurring anxieties, remains the greatest show on earth.
