Archbishop Geoffrey of York, the loyal but illegitimate son of Henry II, appears to have quarrelled with almost everybody. But a study of his life shows that he inspired loyal friends as well as bitter enemies, and in 1212, by then in exile, Geoffrey died a hero following his earlier opposition to John's crippling taxation of the Church. This edition of Geoffrey's acta, together with Dr Lovatt's introduction, provides fresh insight into the ecclesiastical and secular politics of the period in which he lived - and incidentally into the personalities of both Richard and John.
