Amadeo I is the third novel in the fifth and final series of Episodios Nacionales. Historically, the novel begins with Amadeo de Saboya being called to the courts of Spain to assume the throne. His first act is to attend Prim's funeral. Well received by the lower and middle classes, the future king faces rejection from the aristocracy, and various political factions oppose his rule. As is his custom, the author incorporates many romantic plot lines in the story, and uses his characters to illustrate the turmoil of the age. This installment even goes as far as creating an almost fairy tale feel at certain points.
