Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania

Forcibly annexed to the Soviet Union 51 years before, the Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - regained independence in 1991 after an abortive coup in Moscow that accelerated the collapse of the Soviet regime. These nations then embarked on a course of political and economic reintegration with the West. This volume aims to provide an overview of the history, Soviet legacy and post-soviet development of the Baltic states. The authors describe the countries' quest for self determination and their attempts to cope with the political, economic and social problems confronting them in the 1990s.
