Across the river, the superhuman live in towers built on fees collected from doing what was once considered an obligation. When Kit discovers a powerful alien artifact, it pays off more than she ever could have hoped.

The artifact draws the attention of Valene Blackwood, the most powerful of the superhuman Empowered. Kit's ambition to turn the object into a quick sale quickly morphs into harnessing its cosmic powers to mitigating Valene's suffering. Valene hears everything, everywhere, all the time.
