If we set aside the halo of nobility that surrounds governments, and see them simply as another player in the economy, it's clear that they're distinguished by paying their way through extortion and inflation, the latter being what Murray Rothbard called legalized counterfeiting. By such disreputable means, they obtain substantial wealth and power, but are repeatedly involved in wars with rivals costing many lives. All these are the familiar hallmarks of organised crime.
