Freire and Feminism

This book introduces Freires engagement with feminism in theory and practice. It features chapters from academics and practitioners based in Brazil, Canada, Portugal, and Spain, with a focus on the themes of social transformation, autonomy, social justice, equality, freedom, practice and reflection. The contributors engage feminist theorists including bell hooks, Simone de Beauvoir, and Betty Friedan to draw out the value and uniqueness of Freires contribution to feminist thought. The topics covered in the book include Freirian feminism as it relates to film, sex education, violence against women, womens emancipation and liberation, and womens bodies and sport. The book contributes to the fields of gender and sexuality studies and educational studies, applying Freirean critical pedagogical theory in new educational and socio-political contexts, and bridging the gap between Paulo Freire and the discipline of feminism.
