This work is an intriguing story of one girl's rise from poverty in the late 19th century and her enduring love for the son of a wealthy landowner. With determination to better her life, Anna encounters gossip, blackmail, intrigue, deception and murder along her path towards a better future. The cruel and heartless Nigel Tremayne has little knowledge that she is the aunt of his only daughter, whose mother he plotted to kill soon after her birth. Anna is determined to expose the mystery surrounding her sister's death, but Nigel suspects who she truly is. He blackmails her into agreeing to become his wife so that she cannot reveal his deadly secret. With a cruel streak and veiled threats, he causes her to live in fear for her own life and that of her niece Annabelle, if she goes against him. Faced with no option she agrees to become his wife, but it is his brother Adrian whom she truly loves. With twists and turns, more than one revelation eventually leads her to the happiness she has so longed for since she was a child, growing up in squalor on the bleak Devonshire moors. For anyone who enjoys Historical/Romance/mystery, this is a book not to be missed. It keeps the reader turning the pages from start to finish with very believable characters and a strong story line. Set in a small village on the English Devonshire moors, it transports the reader back to a time when there was a very definite class divide and a great deal of poverty amongst those who were less well off. Anna, the main character, breaks free of the poverty encountered in her childhood, becomes educated and rises up the social ladder to fulfill an impossible dream that has been with her since she was a young girl. In so doing, she seeks answers to many unanswered questions and encounters both good and bad in the people she meets along the way, putting her own life in danger in the process. This book will appeal to both young and old alike and is essentially a rags to riches love story combined with a compelling mystery running through its pages. Definitely, in our opinion, this is one which is destined for the best-seller lists.
