This book is a brief history the North Yorkshire of Gargrave village during the ten years before the outbreak of The Great War in 1914, the war years and the period from 1918 until 1925.

We tell stories of the lives of people and businesses of the time, and how they coped with the extreme events that interrupted the normal pattern of life and caused many to leave the villagebefore the start of hostilities. We also tell of the effect that the war had on the village population and businesses.

Many men lost their lives during the battles they endured on the Western Front, Mesopotamia and other theatres of war. Others managed to return to the village. Tales of both the fallen and the survivors are told.

The return to peace caused other problems for the village.  The sale of the majority of properties in the village,  owned by a single landowner, caused some upheaval and uncertainty, Did Gargrave fully recover?  Perhaps it did...
